Pathway's History

The Pathways Danbury Mentoring Ministry was launched in 1997 as a Christ-centered, one-on-one mentoring ministry focused on “at-risk” boys during their middle and high school experience.

The Pathways mentee population is currently 46 boys ranging in age from 11 to 18 years old. Through 2010, 92 boys have entered the program and 20 have graduated from high school, 46 are presently in the program and 26 have left the program due to change of residence, lack of interest or unacceptable behavior. A total of 13 graduates have gone on to enter college. Our 75-80% retention rate through high school graduation and 70% college entry rate compare very favorably to achievement levels in the nation “at large” and particularly in the “at-risk” community where 50% high school dropout rates are common.

Pathways estimates that its volunteer mentors have invested over 20,000 man-hours in youth since 1997 and are currently at a rate of close to 4,000 man-hours per year. Pathways also provides our young men with a weekly Bible study, tutorial assistance, annual summer camp, and family support programs, which totals an annual investment of approximately $5,000 per mentee.

Pathways’ vision is to reach out annually to 50 boys by 2015 and ensure that the Pathways graduation rate for its high school students is at least 80%, which is 15-20% higher than the national average for youth in the USA.

Our growing Ministry is always seeking godly men to meet the need for more mentors. The love of God and kids are the primary attributes we look for in a mentor. In addition, we require a strong sense of accountability to the mentoring relationship and a commitment to honoring the Lord and others. A mentor must be able to make at least a two-year commitment and be able to meet for 1-2 hours per week with his mentee. However, many mentor-mentee relationships continue throughout the mentee’s high school graduation. All young men who graduate from high school, in good standing with Pathways Danbury, receive a $10,000 Grant awarded upon graduation, which matures when the mentee turns twenty-three.
