To fear God is to obey His commandments of which loving Him and loving others are foremost. There is increasing evidence that "at-risk" youth in our community desperately need Christian love in order to escape their environment and find God. The dramatically increasing rate of violent juvenile offenses reflects and results from the spiritual death of young people growing up in "at-risk" environments.

To honor God and be good stewards of the talents with which we've been blessed requires prayer, hard work, and diligent effort in God's will. This is particularly important for the "at-risk" youth without parental, peer, or group support and example. Circumstances that create an "at-risk" environment are a single-parent household, unemployed parents, poor school performance, and/or low self-esteem.

To save the lives and souls of "at-risk" youth requires spiritual outreach from the Christian community in addition to social and material supprt. There is increasing evidence that spiritual weapons are the best means of attacking the problems of drugs, teen pregnancy, and gang violence. Church-sponsored ministries for "at-risk" youth provide spiritual support that secular programs cannot.

Mentoring, tutoring, summer camp, and literacy ministries are effective ways of helping to save young people's lives and to witness for Christ in our community. Christian volunteers working with professional and pastoral counselors is a mission call Christians are morally bound to answer.

Church and foundation support for the ministries must be prayerfully and strategically planned to ensure the ministries and focused, funded, and staffed according to God's will.

The full participation of the Christian community, black and white, will be required. Cooperative work in on-going ministries by Christians of all colors is an effective way to break down racial barriers and divisions in the community.
